I agree 100% with Shawn from Dallas about l/g/b/t rights being co-opted by imperialists. Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is under Pentagon review at an interesting time, when public opinion could at any time go either way on the wars. Re-branding the military as inclusive and progressive will definitely stifle protest from a good number of liberals and leftists who will feel torn if they’re fooled by this latest trick to get people on board with the imperialist agenda. Ironically, the tea party people and right wing bigots will probably find it much easier to become anti-war if lgbt people are allowed to openly serve.

I’m taking a course about Women in Politics in the Third World, and one of the issues that the course started off with was the co-optation of the feminist movement by power structures, particularly colonial states, as a way to rationalize imperialism.

For example, in British India, there was the British Female Mission, in which British Women went to India in order to teach Indian women how to be good wives and mothers, and to give them an education. Indian women, like many women in the “third world” were constructed as ignorant, poor, and traditional, and thus required the salvation of the modern, intelligent British woman. Thus the British had to stay in India.

Today, one of the justifications for the US/Canada/British/NATO occupation of Afghanistan is that Islam is oppressive to women. The irony of this is that Hamid Karzai, our puppet in that country, passed a law essentially legalizing marital rape if the wife does not agree to do household chores. Way to liberate women.
